Teaser Tuesdays: It’s Cooler in the Shade

by Ann-Katrina

Teaser Tuesdays Happy Tuesday! It’s time again for another edition of Teaser Tuesdays…

Here are the rules:

  • Grab your current read
  • Let the book fall open to a random page
  • Share with us two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • You also need to share the title of the book where you get your teaser from…that way people can have some great book recommendations if they like the teaser you’ve given
  • Please avoid spoilers

Shade This week’s teaser:

"I’d had enough. We’d eaten crabs (I hate seafood), gone up in the Trade Center (I hate heights), and visited the National Aquarium (did I mention I hate seafood?)–all because Zachary kept playing the birthday card." pg. pg. 190 Shade by Jeri Smith-Ready

I’m a few chapters into the story and while I admit it took those few chapters for me to warm up to it, I must say I’m intrigued.

The world that’s being painted, where anyone born after a certain date can see spirits and in turn help them, has my eyebrow perked up and Zachary? Have I mentioned that I love accents? He happens to have a Scottish one. :)

Teaser Tuesdays: Tarnished Infidelity

Bird in Hand This week’s teaser:

"And then, when his mother got cancer for the second time, though Charlie knew about the chemo and the radiation and the lymph nodes, it was months before anyone acknowledged how serious it was. She was dying by the time Charlie’s sister called and urged him home." pg. 53 Bird in Hand by Christina Baker Kline

This is one of those books that’s been sitting on my TBR stack for ages that I’ve been meaning to read for just as long and always shove aside for one reason or another, but now I’m focused on finishing it.

I’m about halfway through now and I’m wondering why I waited so long. It’s the story of four people struggling through their individual and coupled lives in the wake of a tragedy.

I love character studies (I’m sure I’ve mentioned this before)–just stick a bunch of interesting people in a pressure cooker together and see what happens–and this book is shaping up to be an interesting one. Infidelity and a car accident in which a young boy dies. That’s what I call a pressure cooker if ever there was one.

Teaser Tuesdays: Case of the Purloined Body

by Ann-Katrina

Teaser Tuesdays Happy Tuesday! It’s time again for another edition of Teaser Tuesdays…

Stolen This week’s teaser:

“I changed my clothes, finding a baggy T-shirt scrunched in the closet in the hall with the words SAVE THE EARTH, NOT YOURSELVES printed on it. It was loose enough not to hurt the burns too much.” pg. 196 Stolen by Lucy Christopher

When I first heard about this book I was certain I wanted to read it. From the synopsis and some early reviews, I was able to gather that it would be controversial in some way. I enjoy reading controversial novels, especially those that present a conundrum. Stolen does just that. From what I’ve gathered, it touches on the concept of Stockholm syndrome. And after reading the first few pages, it seems like it’s going to be a smooth read.

Teaser Tuesdays: A Vampire Ninja? OK, I’m Curious.

Blood Ninja This week’s teaser:

"My dear Taro, I am hidden in the Hokugawa monastery, near the Fuji mountain. Ask for the lady hermit when you come." pg. 222 Blood Ninja by Nick Lake

This book was initially recommended to my by Amazon and I read the synopsis and added it to my wish list. (Needless to say, the concept of a vampiric ninja just appeals to me on so many levels.) Then the magical book fairies at Simon & Schuster sent me a copy and I was all smiles (hooray for book fairies!!). I’m only a couple pages into this one, but I can’t wait to dive deeper. So far, I know there will be a comedic edge to it, which is a major plus.

Teaser Tuesdays: It Only Takes One Touch

by Ann-Katrina

Teaser Tuesdays Happy Tuesday! It’s time again for another edition of Teaser Tuesdays…

White Cat This week’s teaser:

"Maybe being a worker tempts you to be all mystical, but I think mom knows about people because she watches faces very closely. There’re these looks people get that last less than a second–micro-expressions, they call them, fleeting clues that reveal a lot more than we wish." pg. 154 White Cat by Holly Black

And I wish I could say I was loving this book already, but I’m not. Just into the third chapter and the story is barely holding my attention. It’s not that it’s bad or even that there aren’t interesting aspects (it does start with the main character dangling from a rooftop after an episode of sleepwalking), but even with the interesting bits, it still feels stagnant. But I’m not ready to give up yet. I want it to get better because the world (in which people can touch someone to curse them) promises intrigue and I’m hoping that it will.
