Sunday Salon: Book Giveaway & Re-living Childhood

by Ann-Katrina

Welcome to another edition of the Sunday Salon…

The month of January has been filled with reading challenges and, woohoo, giveaways. Just yesterday, I posted about a book giveaway for My Little Red Book and now today I’ll be announcing a giveaway for one lucky Today I Read commenter. Since I’m a little late with the announcement, it’s how I’ll start this Sunday Salon. Continue reading »

Sunday Salon: Tackling Two

by Ann-Katrina

Welcome to another edition of The Sunday Salon…

Despite knowing that I probably shouldn’t be, this week I’ve actually been switching between two books. My intention is to finish both because both seem to be quite good so far.

Duma Key Cover The first is, of course, Stephen King’s Duma Key. So far, I’ve been learning about Edgar Freemantle’s back story. You see, he was in a debilitating accident on a construction site which left him without an arm, a seriously maimed leg, and plenty of mental (and memory) issues.

After his wife left him, and his mental health specialist told him it was time for a change, he finds himself renting a house in Duma Key, FL and that’s where he takes up painting (one of his previous pastimes).

The way the story is unfolding, I know something eerie and good is going to go down. Edgar seems like a tough cookie. Although he’s a difficult to like kind of guy superficially, you almost want to have sympathy for him, but you wonder what kind of guy he was before the accident. It’s difficult to tell, but it definitely seems as though he had one of those personalities you had to get used to.

Sunday Salon: Keys & Graveyards, Unicorns & Interludes, and a Few Ghosts for Good Measure

by Ann-Katrina

Welcome to another edition of the Sunday Salon where I discuss the book of the moment, along with titles I’ve finished (and are still in need of reviews), and what’s upcoming on the TBR list.

I know that there was another book on the TBR list ahead of this, but I couldn’t resist Duma Key any longer.

Plus, I’m not quite in the mood for another historical right at this moment; it seems my internal gearshift is stuck in fantasy, horror, thriller mode and won’t easily come out.

As a result, my eye-sockets are firmly glued to Mr. King’s words. It’s a nice change of pace from the fantasy, fairytale style reading I’ve been consuming lately—not that it hasn’t been wonderful. (See the ‘in need of review’ section for more details.)

Sunday Salon: Of Fairy Tales and Deadlines

by Ann-Katrina

Welcome to another edition of The Sunday Salon…

A thick blanket of darkness has descended on the city and bright white sparkles now decorate the sky. A sweet breeze carrying the fragrance of fresh water from the nearby lake sweeps into my room through an open window as I curl up with my copy of The Last Unicorn.

Oh, that title sounds familiar, does it? I knew I couldn’t put anything past you. Yes, it’s the book I was also reading last Sunday. I intended to be finished with it by today, but this week’s deadlines have kept me busy. The good news is that I’ll probably finish it tonight before I close my eyes and allow my dreams to consume me.

Then, when I wake up tomorrow morning renewed, I will be able to crack the spine of my fresh copy of The Reluctant Widow while I sip on my hot cup of peppermint tea and nibble on my cherry Pop Tart.

Yep, sometimes life is very good. :)

For those of you who are curious, I’m just over halfway finished with The Last Unicorn and I am smitten. It’s absolutely enchanting each time I lose myself in the story of the unicorn’s journey—so far, it’s a hoot. Some might say that Mr. Beagle has gone overboard on the similes, but I feel they add a certain brightness to the tale, even in the darkest passages. One other thing I’m noticing is that it may not be a story for young kiddies—very descriptive and there’s one section that can be somewhat frightening.

Sunday Salon: Unicorns, Wizards, Runaway Mistresses, Reluctant Widows and (Possibly) Possessed Paintings

by Ann-Katrina

The Sunday Salon For my inaugural addition to The Sunday Salon, I’ll be posting about the current book I’m reading, the books I’ve already read and are still in need of reviews, and the next books on my reading list.

The Last Unicorn Cover I’m easing into the second chapter of The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle and I’m enchanted. The prose is lyrical and reminiscent of the old world fairytales; it’s difficult to believe this was written in the 20th century.

This is one book that I’m anxious to finish and I’ll be snatching as much time as I can to do so.

Reconnecting with childhood has never felt so good. :) Continue reading »
